As far as meetings go today has been one of the quietest I can remember on a Saturday, although there were two meetings of outstanding quality, Newbury and Leopardstown. I finished up trading in 12 races, 1 rugby match and 2 football matches, with just one losing event.
My racing started with a very small but profitable trade in the 13:20 at Leopardstown. My second trade was the best of my trades today and it was in the 13:35 at Newbury. I backed Denman at about half distance, when in front, for £789 @ 1.37, which was a better price than the starting price, and laid all off @ 1.20, to leave myself a profit of £137 on the race. It's easy after the event but I probably should have waited a few more seconds and I could have laid off at much shorter odds.
Next was another small but profitable trade. In the 14:05 at Newbury I backed Copsale Lad coming over the final hurdle for £249 @ 1.21 for another £52 profit. My next race was the 14:20 @ Leopardstown. I had quite a few trades in this race but always reckoned on a win for Aran Concerto so I started with a back for £90 @ 1.68 and then a further back for £130 @ 1.66. I then laid off £135 @ 1.56 and £23 @ 1.54 before backing, on the run in, for £34 @ 1.68 and a lay to offset all liability and to green up for £96 @ 1.12. This left me with a profit of £70.
I then had 3 small profitable trades. One of these was in the 15:15 at Newbury where Betdaq had £2.5m traded on the one race which is probably a record amount wagered in a single race. Good quality racing always tends to bring out the really big hitters.
My next race was my only losing event of the day and it was in the 16:00 Hennessey Cognac Gold Cup at Leopardstown. I had been trading away on The Listener throughout the race but my final trade was a back for £100 @ 1.40 when the Listener had cleared the final fence and seemingly with the race at his mercy. I still can not believe that Beef or Salmon, one of my favourite horses, managed to get up to win this race on the line, but that is how it happens, that will teach me for going against a favourite of mine.
I made partial amends in the 16:30 at Leopardstown by laying Old Screw Ball for £29 @ 17.00 to net me £19 profit. In the 16:45 at Lingfield I backed Oscar Snowman in the final 50 yds for £50 @ 1.31 to gain a profit of £15. I had one more small but profitable race to end my days racing with a profit of £227.
I had a look at the final 15 minutes of the Rugby International between Scotland and Wales. With the score at 18 - 9 and with about 3 minutes to go, I backed Scotland for £400 @ 1.05 to give me a profit of £20.
Next I watched the Portsmouth v Manchester City match. After the second goal had been scored I backed the under 2.5 goals market for £155 @ 1.87 and laid off within 2 minutes @ 1.72. a third goal was scored but I had no liability so no loss but no profit either. I then backed the under 3.5 goal market for £140 @ 1.28 and put a lay up @ 1.20. I kept lowering my odds as the game drew towards it's finish and only ended up laying off £2 @ 1.15. I also backed the unders again for £20 @ 1.14. My profit on this match was £42.
My final trading of the day was on the Real Sociedad v Real Madrid match. I had no trade until after the first goal had been scored as I didn't like the very skinny odds on offer before kick off. I ended up backing the under 2.5 goals market for £44 @ 2.52 and laying off @ 2.32. I then backed £25 @ 1.92 and soon after the second goal went in. I then backed the unders again for £26 @ 3.78. Another goal was scored and this left me with a loss on the under 2.5 goals of £51. So I started to trade the under 3.5 goals market with a back for £100 @ 3.25. I laid off £30 @ 2.65, £41 @ 2.63 and £30 @ 2.60. I then backed the unders again for £20 @ 2.90 and laid off £18 @ 2.50. Later I backed the unders for £11 @ 1.95 and had one further lay for £42 @ 1.16. This all resulted in a profit of £72 and therefore, after taking in account the loss on the under 2.5 goals market, a profit of £20 on the match.
The final result for the day was a tidy profit of £291.
